<http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html>

Overview

daemontools is an optional collection of tools for managing UNIX services that can be used with qpsmtpd. daemontools is part of a typical qmail install. Users of MTAs other than qmail may be interested in using runit instead of daemontools.

Overview

runit is a cross-platform Unix init scheme with service supervision, designed as a replacement for sysvinit, and other init schemes. It runs on GNU/Linux, *BSD, MacOSX, Solaris, and can easily be adapted to other Unix operating systems.

There are a number of different ways to deploy the qpsmtpd daemon.

Deployment Models

forkserver

The qpsmtpd-forkserver is one of the most popular deployment options for qpsmtpd. The forkserver forks for every connection. A service supervision tool, e.g. runit or daemontools, is recommended for starting up and monitoring the qpsmtpd-forkserver service. SysV init scripts are also available and are in the RPM and .deb packages. The qpsmtpd-forkserver method is used by perl.org and cpan.org.

The RPM package has a Red Hat-based init.d script for qpsmtpd-forkserver configured for the RPM install layout, however it is easy to modify for a standard tarball install layout if desired. Once the init.d script in place and configured, qpsmtpd-forkserver can be managed via chkconfig and service on RH-based distros.

<http://cr.yp.to/ucspi-tcp.html>

Overview

tcpserver is one of several deployment options for qpsmtpd though it is not used often now that forkserver and Apache::Qpsmtpd are available.

It turns sockets into file descriptors.

The qpsmtpd run script uses tcpserver and softlimit. Tcpserver and softlimit (included in the daemontools package) are part of a typical qmail install.
